Thank You notes – Why they’re so important after an interview.

This may surprise some of you, but not everyone knows that it’s truly a “must-do” after your interview. Thank You notes can paint a big picture about your professionalism. Let’s dig in. The Thank You note has multiple influences on your potential employer. Below are 3 reasons why Thank You notes remain the standard in an interview process.

Respect

  • We are all busy. You’re busy preparing for interviews, mapping out the drive to the meeting, and updating your resume. It is no shock that the person behind the desk, asking you questions about your resume, is busy too! It’s 2017 and let’s face it, we live in a very busy world. Most of us do not acknowledge other people’s agenda. Clients spend a portion of their day to meet with you to discuss a new career path. Sending an email after your interview shows your respect and appreciation.  Wouldn’t you want to hire someone who’s respectful of other’s time?

 Stand-Out

  • You can’t scream and shout in your interview. You must remain calm and professional. So, how do you stand out from the dozens of others fighting for the same position? Thank You note! You’d be surprised to know that over 60% of candidates do not follow up with the interviewer. Keep your name on their radar by sending an email asap after the meeting. Put forth a little effort, and show them you’re interested. Remember, you are fighting for this position, reiterate why you’re the best in your Thank You note.

Communication

  • Writing a Thank You note demonstrates your professional acumen. It’s the perfect way to reiterate your key points from the interview. You may be interviewing for a position that requires a lot of writing between colleagues or clients. A well-written note will showcase your professional communication skills. In a world of Text Messages, abbreviated terms, and quick replies, a well-crafted follow up email sets you apart from the chaff.

It’s not difficult. It’s not time-consuming. Follow up the day of your interview! Grab their business card on your way out and remain on their radar with a well-written, respectful Thank You note.
